Scoops of the Day
YMCA Makes a Splash with Community Celebration 💦
The downtown Fargo YMCA welcomed the entire community through its doors this weekend as it celebrated a major milestone for the Roger & Betty Anda Aquatics Center. For one day only, the facility was open to everyone free of charge, giving even non members a chance to explore the center and enjoy its three pools designed for different ages, skill levels, and activities.
YMCA leaders say the aquatics center has significantly expanded the programs they can offer over the past decade, from swim lessons and water aerobics to everyday fitness and wellness opportunities. Staff also highlighted how the facility has become more than just a place to exercise, helping people build friendships and connect with others in the community. While the center originally opened in April 2016, the anniversary celebration was held in May to line up with National Water Safety Month.

Kid Chefs Bring the Heat in Fargo Cook-Off 🍳
Young chefs put their kitchen skills to the test at the Family Wellness center in Fargo during a fast paced healthy cooking competition focused on creativity, nutrition, and confidence in the kitchen. Fourth and fifth grade students had 45 minutes to whip up their best stir fry dishes while a panel of local judges sampled their creations.
The competition is part of an ongoing Family Wellness program that teaches students nutrition basics and beginner cooking skills throughout the school year. Judges were impressed with the students’ use of fresh ingredients like vegetables, garlic, and ginger, along with unique family inspired touches and bold flavors. Organizers say the event is about much more than winning, helping kids become more comfortable cooking for themselves and encouraging healthy habits they can carry into the future.

FM Community Steps Up for Diabetes Research 👟
Supporters from across the Fargo Moorhead area gathered at the Rustad Recreation Center this weekend for the annual Breakthrough Type 1 Diabetes Walk, raising money and awareness for those living with the condition. Teams sporting matching shirts took to the indoor walking track for the one mile event, with every lap helping fund research, advocacy, and support programs.
Participants and ambassadors said events like this help shine a light on a condition many people don’t fully see or understand. Organizers estimate the walk raised more than $40,000, showing strong community support for ongoing efforts to find better treatments and, eventually, a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

A Volunteer’s Delight

West Fargo Honors Community Power Couple 🌳
A longtime West Fargo couple known for their dedication to helping others is being recognized in a big way this year. Steve and Sue Baron were selected by the City of West Fargo for their years of service and impact across the community, something both say came as a complete surprise.
Steve Baron has been serving with the West Fargo Fire Department since 1997 and became chief of the rural department in 2019. Inspired by watching his own father respond to fire calls when he was young, Steve says giving back has always been part of who he is. Meanwhile, Sue Baron founded Golden Drive Homeless Kids in 2013, which began with donated crayons and coloring books and has since grown into a nonprofit helping homeless children with essentials like food, clothing, hygiene items, and gifts.
The couple says the recognition really reflects the many volunteers and supporters who help make their work possible. As part of the honor, a tree will be planted at Tintes Park.
