Scoops of the Day
School Lunches Headed For The Ballot Tray 🍎
North Dakota voters will decide this November whether all public school students should receive free breakfast and lunch each school day. Secretary of State Michael Howe announced that enough valid signatures were collected to officially place the proposal, now labeled Measure 3, on the Nov. 3 ballot. Organizers turned in more than 57,000 signatures, with just over 49,000 accepted after the review process, well above the number needed to qualify.
If voters approve the constitutional amendment, public schools and charter schools across the state would be required to provide one free breakfast and one free lunch to enrolled students each day. Private schools, tribal schools, and Bureau of Indian Education schools could choose whether to participate. The proposal would also require the state to reimburse schools for meal costs, including yearly inflation adjustments, while encouraging districts to maximize available federal funding first. If lawmakers cannot find another funding source, the measure would tap into the Legacy Earnings Fund.

Harvesting Hope Breaks Ground In Fargo 🌾
Construction is officially underway on a new statewide distribution center for Great Plains Food Bank in Fargo. The new facility, located on Westrac Drive, is part of the organization’s $30.5 million Harvesting Hope Capital Campaign aimed at expanding hunger relief efforts across North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota. Leaders say the upgraded center will help meet the growing demand for food assistance throughout the region.
According to Great Plains Food Bank, more than 167,000 people in the area are currently facing food insecurity, with requests for assistance rising 11% in 2025 compared to last year. The larger distribution center is expected to improve storage capacity, efficiency, and outreach efforts as the organization continues working to support families in need. The new facility is expected to open in Fall 2027.

Romkey Park’s Big Glow Up Is Almost Ready 🌳
Moorhead residents are getting closer to enjoying the newly redesigned Romkey Park, with city officials announcing that the park’s new pool is expected to open on June 4. The larger “Reimagine Romkey” project is still wrapping up, with the park’s official grand opening planned for later in June once newly planted grass has time to grow in. City leaders say an exact grand opening date should be announced soon.
The upgraded park is bringing several new features to the area, including an expanded playground, updated basketball courts, a new skate park, and the brand new pool. The improvements are part of a larger investment in Moorhead’s park system after the city secured $5 million in funding back in 2023. Once complete, the refreshed park is expected to become a major summer destination for families and visitors alike.

Taking Steps Toward A Cure In Moorhead 💙
The annual Walk MS fundraiser is returning to Moorhead on May 16, giving community members a chance to support those living with multiple sclerosis while raising money for research and resources. The event takes place at Concordia College, with activities beginning at Barry Auditorium before walkers head out on either a 1 mile or 3 mile accessible route. Organizers say mobility devices are welcome, and participants can choose to join in person, virtually, or through a personalized “Walk MS: Your Way” experience.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects the central nervous system and can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, pain, vision issues, mobility challenges, and memory difficulties. While researchers still do not know the exact cause, events like Walk MS help fund support services and ongoing research efforts. The site opens at 8:30 a.m. with an opening ceremony beginning at 9:15 a.m. before the walk starts at 9:30.
