West Fargo Schools Practice Emergency Reunification Drill 🚍
Hundreds of West Fargo High School students took part in a large-scale safety exercise Wednesday, as the district conducted its annual reunification drill at Scheels Arena. About 1,100 students were bused from campus between 9 a.m. and noon on April 15 to simulate what would happen if students needed to be evacuated and safely reunited with families during an emergency. This year’s scenario involved a simulated gas leak inside the school.
District leaders say the exercise is part of a rotating annual training program designed to test different emergency situations and improve response procedures. Staff monitored student check-ins in real time through an incident command system, ensuring accountability throughout the drill. Officials also reflected on recent real-world events, including a school incident earlier in the week, noting that practice like this helps prepare staff and students for unpredictable situations.
Administrators emphasized that while the timing raised questions, it also reinforced the importance of continued preparation. The district regularly evaluates and updates its safety and communication plans, with the goal of ensuring every student can be accounted for quickly and safely if a real emergency ever occurs. Breaking the Silence: Oakes Students Open Up About Mental Health 🧠
Oakes Public Schools recently hosted a BeHEARD session, a mental health-focused training program designed to help both educators and students better understand behavioral health challenges in teens. Offered through Sanford Health and supported by First International Bank & Trust, the program equips school staff with tools to recognize and respond to issues like stress and anxiety, while also creating space for students to safely express what they are experiencing.
During the session, a mental health expert guided junior and senior high students through how the brain reacts to stress before addressing anonymously submitted questions. Many of the concerns centered on academic and athletic pressure, highlighting struggles that are often left unspoken. In addition to learning coping strategies like breathing techniques, students were also connected with resources for continued support, reinforcing the importance of open conversations and community partnerships in addressing youth mental health. A Sundae of Giving
Helping K9 Blue Heal: Fundraiser Launched for Retired Fargo Police Dog 🐾
Support is growing for retired Fargo Police Department K9 Blue, whose former handler and community members have launched a GoFundMe to help cover medical and travel expenses following recent health issues. Blue has been diagnosed with bilateral perineal hernias and an enlarged prostate, conditions that will require surgery and ongoing care.
During his service with Sgt. Sam Bollman from 2017 to 2025, Blue played a major role in local law enforcement efforts, contributing to more than 1,000 deployments. Over his career, he helped assist in the seizure of 39 pounds of narcotics, $65,000 in cash, and supported 119 arrests. Organizers of the fundraiser say the goal is to give back to a K9 who spent years protecting the Fargo community and its officers. For more details, read the full article here.
