Scoops of the Day

Rising Need for Students Facing Homelessness 📚

Matthew’s Voice Project says it is seeing more students experiencing homelessness each year, now serving about 1,000 students across Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead, and Horace schools. The nonprofit helps cover basic needs and urgent expenses so students can stay focused on school.

Data from the Center for Public Integrity shows North Dakota students experiencing homelessness are 31 percent less likely to graduate than their peers. As numbers grow, so does the need for funding and resources. Matthew’s Voice Project will host its second annual Impact Without Excess fundraiser on April 21 at the Dakota Medical Foundation to help meet that demand.

New Pup on Patrol: Meet Beau 🐶

The North Dakota Highway Patrol has a new four-legged recruit in training. Beau, a 12-week-old bloodhound, is the latest addition to the agency’s trailing team based in Fargo. Bloodhounds are called in for some of the region’s toughest cases, from missing children and people with dementia to criminal suspects. While drones and aircraft assist in searches, handlers say nothing replaces a dog on the ground. With roughly 300 million scent receptors and signature floppy ears that help trap odors, bloodhounds can follow a trail that’s days old.

The Highway Patrol has used bloodhounds for about 14 years and responds to around 70 calls annually, sometimes traveling across state lines to assist. Beau is currently focused on basic training and socialization and won’t be certified for full trails until around 9 months old. Handlers say the dogs are high-energy, determined workers, and the tight-knit bloodhound community often helps other agencies build similar programs. Officials hope Beau’s growing social media fame helps spread awareness so agencies call sooner when someone goes missing.

Hotel Connected to Fargo Airport Could Take Off ✈️

A hotel directly connected to Hector International Airport may be in Fargo’s future. Speaking on The Chamber Link on WDAY Radio, Municipal Airport Authority Chair Rick Berg said the board is exploring the idea as a way to make flying out of Fargo more convenient.

Berg noted that giving travelers the option to stay overnight at a connected hotel and walk straight to their gate could encourage more people in the region to choose Fargo over driving to Minneapolis Saint Paul, especially during harsh winter weather. Airport leaders see it as another incentive to keep local travelers flying local.

A Sundae of Giving

Cool Donation Supports Small Town Groceries ❄️

The Great Plains Food Bank is thanking Fairchild Equipment for donating a walk in freezer valued at about 75,000 dollars. The unit, originally housed at Fairchild’s new factory, will now support a regional grocery and local food hub initiative led by the North Dakota Rural Electric Cooperatives Foundation.

Food bank leaders say the freezer will play a key role in helping small town grocery stores remain open and reducing food deserts across the state. The unit is expected to go into service once the regional food hub facility is up and running.
