Scoops of the Day
UND Scoops Up Solution to Rural Nursing Shortage 🩺
The University of North Dakota is stepping up to help tackle North Dakota’s rural nursing shortage with a new initiative called Gero STARR. Backed by a $3.6 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, the program is designed to prepare nurses specifically for work in smaller communities where the need is often greatest.
Students in the program take part in classroom instruction, hands on simulation training, and supervised clinical experience at rural clinics. To qualify, participants must come from rural North Dakota communities and agree to work in the state for at least a year after graduation. Program Director Dawn Denny says many students discover they truly enjoy working in close knit, small town settings. The first group includes eight students, with plans to welcome eight more next year. For more details, read the full article here.
Sanford Aims for Another Heart Healthy Win ❤️
Heart Month is bringing a little friendly competition to the rehab floor at Sanford Health. The Fargo team is taking part in the annual Cardiac Rehab Challenge, with a goal of logging more than 70 miles on a treadmill in just 10 hours. Cardiac rehab staff and patients from programs across the Midwest lace up for the event each year to spotlight the importance of physical activity in preventing and recovering from heart disease.
Sanford Fargo has claimed the title the past couple of years, and they are hoping to keep that streak alive. Cardiac Rehab Manager Brad Hintermeyer says the bigger mission goes beyond miles logged. It is about celebrating patients, staff, and the daily progress made from those first post surgery steps to confidently walking or even jogging again. Final results will be shared once the challenge wraps up, but the real victory is in the recovery stories happening along the way. For more details, read the full article here.
Final Salute for a Fargo Hero 🎖️
A Vietnam War veteran who went unclaimed will be laid to rest with full military honors this Tuesday at Fargo National Cemetery. Sgt. Clifford Hurly Brenner, a Green Beret medic who served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969, including a tour in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, will receive honors at noon on Feb. 17. His service earned him numerous commendations, including the Combat Medical Badge, Parachutist Badge, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and multiple service medals recognizing his bravery and dedication.
According to Fargo American Legion Post 2, Brenner’s record reflects a decorated and courageous military career. The Fargo Memorial Honor Guard will conduct the service, and members of the public are encouraged to attend and help ensure this veteran is not laid to rest alone. It’s a powerful reminder that even decades later, a grateful community can still show up. For more details, read the full article here.

The Giving Scoop

FM Area Scoops Up $30.4 Million for Giving Hearts Day 💙
Giving Hearts Day 2026 once again proved just how generous the Fargo Moorhead community can be. Preliminary numbers show an impressive $30.4 million raised from nearly 40,000 donors, supporting 650 charities through almost 71,000 individual gifts. Since launching in 2008, the annual day of giving has now helped organizations raise more than $256 million across the region, cementing its place as a major force for local good.
Four nonprofits crossed the $1 million mark this year, including New Life Center, YWCA Cass Clay, Farm Rescue, and Great Plains Food Bank. Beyond dollars raised, the giving spirit showed up in other ways too, with donations of food and goods collected at 155 drop off sites and hundreds of pledges and volunteer reports logged during the month long campaign.
Several groups also received major boost dollars and Golden Tickets from area foundations and businesses, giving their totals an extra lift. While final audited results are still on the way, this year’s total already highlights the powerful ripple effect of collective generosity across the FM area.
