Fresh fruit will soon be growing in more North Dakota communities thanks to $120,000 in state grants awarded to four organizations to establish new community orchards. The projects, located in Tokio, Maddock, McKenzie County, and Belcourt, will provide much more than apples and berries. They'll serve as hands-on learning spaces where students and community members can gain experience with planting, pruning, harvesting, and caring for fruit trees while promoting healthier eating habits.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says community orchards help strengthen neighborhoods by bringing people together and increasing access to fresh produce, with many of the harvests benefiting local schools and families in need. The initiative also comes as USDA data shows most adults and children still fall short of recommended daily fruit intake, making these orchards a meaningful investment in both education and community wellness.

Moorhead Area Public Schools is celebrating the completion of its five-year high school renovation with a grand opening on Aug. 18.
