Neighboring Fire Departments Join Forces 🚒
The West Fargo Fire Department is stepping up to house a Fargo Fire Department engine and its crew while Fargo’s West Acres Station 5 undergoes construction. West Fargo Fire Chief Dan Fuller called the situation “unique,” as such arrangements between neighboring departments are rare. However, with space available, the collaboration became a natural fit.
This partnership extends beyond just housing—both departments frequently train together and work side by side in emergency responses. Fargo Fire Chief Steve Dirksen emphasized how closely the two cities operate, noting that the West Fargo headquarters is positioned right on the Fargo border, making cooperation seamless. The new Fargo fire station is expected to be completed by August. For more details, read the full article here.
West Fargo Fire Earns Gold Helmet Recognition 🏅
With cancer impacting nearly 68% of firefighters in their lifetime, the West Fargo Fire Department is taking proactive steps to protect its crew. The department has earned Gold Helmet status by having over half of its firefighters voluntarily register for the National Firefighter Registry, a program aimed at studying and reducing cancer risks in the profession. Fire Chief Dan Fuller emphasized the importance of this effort, while Essentia oncologist Dr. Harish Ahuja highlighted the increased risk firefighters face for cancers like mesothelioma and bladder cancer.
To limit exposure, West Fargo Fire follows strict decontamination measures, including keeping dirty gear out of fire station cabs, washing equipment after every fire, and tracking all exposures. With only 23 departments nationwide achieving Gold Helmet status, West Fargo Fire is setting a high standard for safety. Chief Fuller noted that in his 10 years with the department, no one has suffered serious illness—something they aim to maintain with these precautions. For more details, read the full article here.
Fargo Public Schools Teacher of the Year 🏆
Bart Manson, a social studies teacher at Davies High School, has been named the 2025 Teacher of the Year by Fargo Public Schools. Manson, who has been with the district since 2008, was surprised by the honor, especially when his son, a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, made a special trip to join the celebration. Manson, who also serves as the head boys basketball coach at Davies, has a long career in education, having taught in Fargo, West Fargo, Grand Forks, and Belcourt.
Teaching has had its challenges, but Manson finds the rewards in his connection with students and the ever-evolving classroom dynamic. His recognition now moves him into consideration for the Cass County Teacher of the Year Award, with the potential to become North Dakota's Teacher of the Year. Officer Wellness and Community Engagement 💙
The newly formed Fargo Police Foundation is dedicated to supporting the well-being of Fargo’s police officers while fostering stronger community connections. Building on the work of the former Badges of Unity organization, the Foundation focuses on three key pillars: staff wellness, community engagement, and expanded resources. This initiative is designed to enhance the physical, mental, and emotional health of officers, strengthen community trust, and provide essential tools and training to address modern policing challenges.
Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski emphasized that the Foundation marks a significant step forward in supporting officers and improving their relationships with the community. As a nonprofit, the Foundation will collaborate with local businesses and civic leaders to advance its mission and offer meaningful support to the Fargo Police Department.
