Scoops of the Day

Minnesota Deer License Sales Slightly Down Ahead of Season 🦌

Minnesota’s deer hunting season kicks off this Saturday, but license sales are trailing slightly compared to previous years. As of one week before opening day, the Minnesota DNR reports over 160,000 licenses sold, including approximately 108,534 regular firearm licenses and 21,281 youth licenses. This is down from 160,680 licenses in 2023 and 166,683 in 2022. The numbers hint at a gradual dip, though enthusiasm for the sport remains strong in the state. Ruby Slippers From The Wizard of Oz Up for Auction After 2005 Heist 👠

A piece of Hollywood history is hitting the auction block—Judy Garland’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, which were stolen nearly 20 years ago in Minnesota. Heritage Auctions in Dallas has opened bidding on the iconic footwear, with bids running until December 7. The slippers, previously on display at the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, were stolen in 2005 and recovered by the FBI in 2018. Now, the museum and other collectors are competing to own one of only four remaining pairs. Grand Rapids has been actively fundraising, aiming to bring the treasured artifact back home, with support from a $100,000 allocation by Minnesota lawmakers. ($) MSUM’s “Become a Teacher Day” Sparks Interest in Future Educators 📚

Minnesota State University Moorhead recently hosted "Become a Teacher Day," giving over 100 high school students a firsthand look at the teaching profession. Participants enjoyed a Q&A with current education majors, attended a class, and even played education-themed bingo. This event, aimed at inspiring future educators, has doubled in attendance since its inaugural year, underscoring the growing interest and critical need for new teachers in the community.

Keri DeSutter, MSUM’s director of teacher education, expressed enthusiasm for the event’s growth and its potential to address local teacher shortages by engaging students early. For more details, read the full article here.

($) Quilt Drive for Veterans Extended 🧵

Support Fargo-Moorhead veterans this holiday season by donating a quilt or fleece blanket at any Gate City Bank location. Organized by the American Red Cross in partnership with Gate City Bank, the annual Quilts for Veterans drive has extended its deadline beyond November 30 due to a lower-than-expected turnout of donated quilts. These blankets offer warmth and comfort to veterans in need, with a goal to bring them holiday cheer and support.

Quilts must be new, durable, and able to withstand industrial washing. Handmade or purchased quilts are welcome, as well as fleece blankets with neutral or patriotic designs. Drop-offs are encouraged to ensure no veteran goes without a warm gift this season. For more details, read the full article here.
