Scoops of the Day

Local Spellers Head to Nationals 🐝

Three talented students from our region are packing their dictionaries and heading to Washington, D.C. for the 100th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. Jaden Go (East Grand Forks), Eli Schlosser (Fergus Falls), and Josslyn Hansen (Wadena) will represent our area as they take the national stage starting Tuesday, May 27.

Jaden is no stranger to the Bee—he competed last year and tied for 60th. This year, he and the other 242 contestants from across the country and U.S. territories will compete for the top title, with finals set for Thursday, May 29. For more details, read the full article here.

Jackson’s Journey to Healing 🎗️

12-year-old Jackson Berg from West Fargo has officially rung the bell at the Roger Maris Cancer Center, celebrating the end of his treatment for a rare form of cancer—Primary Renal Rhabdomyosarcoma. After a year of enduring difficult treatments, this milestone marks a powerful moment of hope and new beginnings.

Jackson's story touched many in the community, especially after his JoyJar was stolen last year. In January, the community rallied behind him with a Lend A Hand Up benefit, showing overwhelming support. Surrounded by loved ones and medical staff on May 16, Jackson marked the end of a difficult chapter. While he’ll continue with periodic scans in the years ahead, his family is embracing the moment. “He’s doing good, and he’s excited to be a ‘normal kid’ this summer,” his mom shared. Who Wants to Be a Big Chicken 🐔

The Red River Valley Fair is still on the hunt for someone to step into the feathers of Big Roy—the beloved larger-than-life rooster mascot who roams the fairgrounds bringing smiles to kids and adults alike. The fair runs July 4–13, and organizers are looking for someone with high energy, a great sense of humor, and zero fear of a little playful embarrassment.

The gig involves donning a blowup felt suit outdoors in the middle of a North Dakota summer, but don’t worry—they’ve thought of everything: ice packs, a built-in A/C system, and a 30-minutes-on, one-hour-off rotation to beat the heat. If you’re up for the challenge and have a knack for entertaining, this could be your time to shine. For more details, read the full article here.

A Scoop of Support

United Way Launches Supply Drive 🎒

United Way’s 2025 School Supply Drive is in full swing, and they’re aiming to fill 6,500 backpacks for local students in need. With one in seven children in our area growing up in poverty, this effort helps ensure every student can start the school year with confidence and the tools they need to succeed.

Last year, the highest demand came from families with children in grades K–5. Donations can be made through an online wish list available now through July 28, or by contributing financially—just $25 provides a fully stocked backpack for one student. Backpack pickup will take place August 6–8 at the Fargodome. For more details, read the full article here.
