Scoops of the Day
Walking Toward a Clearer Future 👁️
The North Dakota Association for the Blind hosted its annual Walk for Vision at NDSU’s Crossroads Campus Lutheran Center, raising awareness for the 24,000 North Dakotans affected by uncorrectable vision loss. The event not only highlighted the challenges faced by those who are legally blind but also celebrated the advancements in technology that make employment more accessible for them. Supporters had the option to participate in-person or virtually, showing strong community backing. Walks will continue throughout the year in Grand Forks, Bismarck, Minot, and Williston. NDSU Researchers Shine Globally 🌍
North Dakota State University has made its mark on the scientific community, with 25 of its researchers being recognized among the top 2% in the world. This prestigious designation is based on citation metrics like the h-index and co-authorship, as highlighted in the latest science-wide author databases. The list, which recognizes influential scientists across multiple fields, is updated annually. Colleen Fitzgerald, NDSU’s Vice President of Research, emphasized that this recognition reflects the global impact of the university’s research. For more details, read the full article here.
Minnesota Grows a Monster Pumpkin 🎃
Travis Gienger, a horticulture teacher from Anoka, Minnesota, claimed victory at the 51st World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Northern California with a pumpkin tipping the scales at an impressive 2,471 pounds. Gienger, who has now won the contest four years in a row, narrowly beat the runner-up by just 6 pounds. While his gourd fell short of breaking his own world record from last year, Gienger credited his success to healthy soil and dedicated care, despite challenging weather conditions. After a 35-hour drive, the massive pumpkin’s next stop will be a Halloween event in Southern California, where professional carvers will turn it into a 3D masterpiece. Stepping Up for a Cause 👟
More than 60 pairs of shoes are being donated to hurricane victims in Florida, thanks to a generous gesture from Denny Richter, former owner of Rae’s Shoes in Perham. His donation, facilitated by Jerry Walker, a supervisor at the American Red Cross in Fargo, will be sent to those affected by the recent hurricanes. The American Red Cross is working hard to provide relief, and they’re encouraging others to get involved as well. If you want to lend a hand, you can reach out to the Fargo chapter.
