Let’s scoop it!
Scoops of the Day
Honoring Heroes, 50 Years Later 🇺🇸
This weekend marks a powerful milestone for local Vietnam veterans as the community commemorates 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War. Kicking off at the Fargo Air Museum, Vietnam Memorial Week will feature a full lineup of events, including a missing man ceremony, veteran resources, and an impressive display of era-specific aircraft and military vehicles.
Keynote speaker Rex Selnes, alongside fellow veteran Ed Ahonen, shared on KVRR’s Morning Show how community support has evolved since their return from Vietnam—shifting from indifference to deep appreciation. They emphasize how crucial public engagement is to the well-being of veterans and encourage locals to attend the events to reflect, honor, and learn. For more details, read the full article here.
Fargo’s Sky-High Upgrade is Taking Off ✈️
Hector International Airport is reaching new heights with a $200 million expansion project, and Senator John Hoeven got a firsthand look this week. Following the airport’s busiest month ever in March—with over 56,000 boardings—the project aims to match Fargo’s growth with major upgrades.
Highlights include a new parking garage (opening August 2025), four new boarding gates, a skywalk, and renovations to existing terminals. The terminal is set to open in January 2026, with full completion expected by 2027. Hoeven, who’s helped secure nearly $40 million in funding, says the new facility will be one of the nicest between Fargo and Minneapolis. For more details, read the full article here.
Marathon Milestones at Any Age 🏃♀️🏃♂️
Ken and Rhonda Magel of Fargo are showing that age is just a number as they train together for this year’s Fargo Marathon. Married for 47 years and running for nearly 20 of them, the couple has turned morning jogs into a shared lifestyle. Rhonda, nearing 70, is prepping for the full marathon, while Ken, 74, is gearing up for the 10K—different races, same path.
Rhonda just completed the Boston Marathon, adding to her incredible resume of 37 marathons and 200+ half marathons. The couple credits their love for running—and the legacy of former Fargo Marathon director Mark Knutson—for inspiring them. They’ve found life lessons in every mile, especially the importance of taking challenges one step at a time. For more details, read the full article here.

NDSU Grad Shines in L.A. 🌟
Jessica Stoen, a second-grade teacher at Northern Cass Elementary and 2017 NDSU graduate, recently received a prestigious honor on the national stage. She was celebrated in Los Angeles as one of the 2024 recipients of the Milken Educator Award—a distinction often referred to as the "Oscars of Teaching." The award includes a $25,000 cash prize, an all-expenses-paid trip to the Milken Forum at UCLA, and lifetime membership in the Milken Educator Network.
Recognized for her excellence in education, Stoen joined 41 other outstanding educators from across the country to share insights and ideas at the forum themed “3,000 Strong and Making an Impact.” The event also marked a major milestone: over 3,000 Milken Educators have now been honored since the award’s creation nearly 40 years ago.
