Scoops of the Day

State Power Move ⚡

North Dakota will now oversee its own coal combustion residuals (CCR) program after receiving approval from the Environmental Protection Agency. The change gives the state authority to manage CCR disposal instead of the federal government. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the decision highlights local expertise, while Governor Kelly Armstrong noted it strengthens U.S. energy independence by allowing the state to extract rare earth elements from CCR. North Dakota becomes the fourth state with an approved program. For more details, read the full article here.

A New Chapter for Jay’s Smokin’ BBQ 🍖

After nearly eight years of serving up smoky favorites, Jay’s Smokin’ BBQ is transitioning to new ownership. Founders Jay and Rochelle Henrichs announced they’re stepping back as Rochelle faces a battle with Stage 3 colon cancer. While details of the handoff are still being finalized, the couple shared their gratitude for the community’s support and their focus on Rochelle’s recovery.

Jay’s first opened in the Moorhead Center Mall before moving to Main Avenue in 2021, becoming a local staple for barbecue lovers. The family is planning fundraisers to support Rochelle’s treatment, and a GoFundMe has been set up to help. For more details, read the full article here.

Moorhead Area Public Schools will receive $5.87 million annually to help strengthen the district’s budget and restore financial stability. The funding will support daily operations, facility improvements, and long-term planning to ensure students and staff have the resources they need. A new set of Wheels

New Wheels, New Hope 🚗
Fargo Army veteran James Malstrom received a life-changing gift through Progressive Insurance’s Keys to Progress program, providing him with a reliable vehicle to help regain independence and reconnect with family. The donation event at the West Fargo VFW marked the program’s 13th year of supporting veterans nationwide.

Previously reliant on public transportation, Malstrom often struggled to visit his disabled daughter, attend church, and make VA appointments. The new car will make all of that possible again, improving his quality of life and restoring his sense of freedom. This year, 99 veterans across the country are receiving vehicles, continuing Progressive’s mission to give back to those who have served. For more details, read the full article here.
