Spuds Celebrate Back to Back State Titles 🏒

The Moorhead Spuds returned home to a packed gym on Sunday, March 8, where the community gathered to celebrate the team’s second straight Class AA boys hockey state championship. Fans dressed in orange and black welcomed the team after its thrilling 5 to 4 double overtime win over top seeded Minnetonka. Evan Wanner scored the game winning goal in the second overtime, helping Moorhead finish the season with an impressive 27 and 3 record. According to WDAY, players said the strong community support made the moment even more special.

The victory also marks a historic milestone for the program. Moorhead is the first team to win back to back Class AA boys hockey titles in more than a decade, the first since Edina accomplished the feat in 2013 and 2014. Head coach Jon Ammerman praised the team’s resilience in the championship game, highlighting their commitment to one another and refusal to give up. Just two years ago, the Spuds had never won a state title, making this second championship a remarkable run for the program and its fans.

Fargo Asks Residents to Name Its Garbage Trucks 🗑️

The City of Fargo is letting the community have some fun by helping name its garbage trucks. After asking residents for creative ideas, the city received more than 200 submissions. Fargo’s Solid Waste Department, along with Deputy Mayor Denise Kolpack, narrowed the list down to 10 finalists based on creativity, originality, and overall appeal.

Some of the standout names include Trashasaurus Rex, Hector the Collector, Recyclopse, Truck Norris, and Bin Diesel. Residents can now vote for their favorites online through March 15 at 11:59 p.m. The top three names will be displayed on Fargo garbage trucks, and the people who submitted the winning names will receive Fargo gear and may even appear in a video shared on the city’s social media.

Bison Punch Ticket to the Big Dance 🦬

The North Dakota State Bison are heading back to the NCAA Tournament after capturing the Summit League men’s basketball championship for the first time since 2020. NDSU defeated the rival North Dakota Fighting Hawks 70 to 62 in the title game, securing the conference’s automatic bid to March Madness. The win marks a big moment for the program as the Bison return to the national tournament after several years away.

With the conference title secured, the Bison now turn their attention to Selection Sunday, when they’ll find out who they face in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The matchup and seed will determine where NDSU begins its March Madness run.

A Sundae of Giving

Empty Bowls Event Serves Up Support for Local Food Pantry

Community members gathered at Swing Barrel Brewing Company over the weekend for the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser supporting Churches United for the Homeless. For 35 dollars, attendees received a handcrafted bowl made by local artisans and could sample a variety of soups from area favorites including Rustica and The Fryn' Pan. All proceeds from the event went directly to the Dorothy Day Food Pantry.

Organizers say the fundraiser highlights the power of community collaboration, bringing together artists, restaurants, brewers, and volunteers to support neighbors in need. While the pantry is in a more stable position than it was last year when SNAP benefits were frozen, Churches United says the need for food and supplies continues as they work to serve the Fargo Moorhead area.
